The town’s history dates back to 1842 when the region’s first pastoral residents set home near the famous Dooen Swamp. The two, Charles Carter and James Darlot had their homestead near the Brighton pastoral land. In addition to this, the town was located on the gold escort route which meant that as trade grew, the town grew.

Over the years, the region opened a hotel, schools, churches, farms and even the construction of a railway line that linked Dooen to Horsham. The presence of the Wimmera River led to the agricultural development of the town, reinforcing the town’s position as an agricultural and pastoral district.

In the 1930s, the Brighton homestead which was one of the town’s key landmarks was demolished. The building materials from the site were used in the construction of the Dooen Golf Club House. The old golf course has since undergone renovations severally to ensure that it is up to playing standard for enthusiastic golfers in the town.

Another iconic building in Dooen is the Old Dooen Pub that remains one of the few original buildings occupied today.
