Soldiers Memorial Park

Soldiers Memorial Park is a historic park located in the Town Hall Square of Ararat.

It was built in August 1930 to commemorate the soldiers who fought during World War I and II, as well as other battles that took place in Vietnam, Borneo, Malaya, and Korea.

The memorial here features a stone cenotaph and a bronze plaque – with the park itself designed by A.S. Hall ARIBA.

The structures were inspired by the cenotaph of Sir Edward Lutyens in Whitehall, London. After the Second World War, the memorial park was developed even further to include memorials of the fallen from that war. Meanwhile, the bronze plaque was created by sculptor Wallace Anderson.

Soldiers Memorial Park’s design includes conventional Classical design, though inspiration was also taken from funerary monuments of ancient Rome and Greece. The materials used include sandstone and bluestone, among others.
