Natimuk

With a history dating back to the 1870s, this town is rich in heritage and culture; evident in the numerous historic buildings that line its tranquil streets.

The town’s name is drawn from an Aboriginal word, which means “little lake”. It is thought that its name refers to Lake Natimuk; a popular site for outdoor fun that’s not too far from the town centre. The lake is equipped with a picnic area, boat ramp, and a barbecue shelter.

Perhaps the most famous attraction here is the majestic Mount Arapiles – just 10km from town. It’s recognised as one of Australia’s best rock-climbing destinations, and its massive sandstone rock face has been the backdrop of numerous adrenaline-pumping challenges. If you can make it to the peak of Mount Arapiles, you will be rewarded with stunning views over the lakes and farmland – so make sure to bring your camera! The best time to visit the slopes of Mount Arapiles is in the spring, which is when yellow canola flowers create patches of stunning colour around the fields.

Mitre Rock, a renowned sacred Aboriginal site, is located along the Natimuk-Frances Road. This large rocky outcrop has significant importance for the Aboriginals, and it’s also a popular tourist destination.

Other heritage sites worth visiting in Natimuk include the Courthouse Museum on Main Street. Dating back to 1890, the courthouse is now a local museum, open on second Sundays of the month.

The Jane Duff Reserve, a 26-hectare reserve filled with native plants, is an excellent spot to picnic. It also acts as a monument for Jane Duff; one of the three kids who ended up getting lost in the bush for nine days back in 1864.

If you are looking for a place to stay, there is a hotel and caravan park in town, or there is quite a lot of accommodation available in Horsham.
