Rupanyup

Rupanyup is a scenic country town located around 285km away from Melbourne, 50km from Horsham and 60km from Stawell.

Its name is derived from ‘rubunyup’, an Aboriginal term that refers to a tree by a campsite near a swamp. The town was established in 1870 by German and British selectors.

Though a small town, there are lots to see and do while here. Cromie Street is the highlight of this town; a recently renovated area featuring a beautiful garden, shady trees, a replica of the first store in town, a lagoon, and picnic area.

The Jack Emmett Billabong is home to native flora and fauna, making it a picturesque spot for some weekend camping. Not too far away is the Rupanyup Memorial Park, a great place to relax while camping and picnicking.

Wood’s Farming and Heritage Museum is another major attraction along the Wimmera Highway. Both kids and adults can marvel at the collection of farm memorabilia that include stationary engines, tools, tractors, and much more. The museum is open by appointment, so make sure that you stop by for a visit.

Heritage and architecture enthusiasts are recommended to check out the Rupanyup Railway Station, which dates back to 1890. The Memorial Hall, Post Office, Commercial Hotel, and the CBA Bank are filled with historical gems to discover. Other heritage sites worth visiting include the Masonic Lodge, Anglican Church, heritage-listed Primary School, and the local cemetery near Dyer Street.

Perhaps the main attraction of the town is the Rupanyup Silo Art; a decommissioned wheat silo with a large-scale mural created by Russian artist Julia Volchkova, which highlights the region’s youth and their passion for team sports.

If you are looking for a place to stay, you can consider camping at a Caravan Park, or there a number of accommodation options available in Murtoa, which include hotels, cabins and cottages.
