St Michael and Johns Catholic Church

St. Michael and John’s Catholic Church serves the local Catholic community of Horsham with weekly Sunday Mass services and a Saturday Vigil.

The church was built in 1987 and known for its award-winning design thanks to Greg Burgess, a famous Australian architect.

The structure is also recognised for being one of the most expressionist church buildings in the country.

Its unique design is not found anywhere else, making it a delightful stopover for visitors as well as residents of the community as a place of worship.

What truly makes it stand out is the fact that its design incorporates complex religious symbolism as well as contextual references.

The first Mass was held in Horsham in 1857 by Fr Patrick Madden. The first Catholic Church was opened by Bishop O’Connor on 12 November 1876. This church became the Primary School until 1997 when it was then demolished.

A new brick church was opened on 14 December 1913 by Bishop Higgins of Ballarat. The present church was dedicated and opened on 10 May 1987 by Bishop Mulkearns, Bishop of Ballarat.

Sts Michael and John’s Catholic Church is located at 13 McLachlan Street in Horsham.
