Australia Day Ararat

Celebrated on January 26th, Australia day is a public holiday that honours the arrival of the first British Fleet on Australian soil.

Visitors to Ararat can join in on the festivities to commemorate the day, with a local community event held each year at the Alexandra Oval Community Centre, Ararat Outdoor Pool and Alexandra Gardens.

Australia Day recognises that on 26th January 1788, the first British fleet arrived at Port Jackson in Australia. The event is celebrated to reflect the rich history, diverse society and the unique heritage of Australia.

The Australia Day celebrations in Ararat feature three main locations of festivities:

  • Alexandra Oval Community Centre: Official Australia Day Ceremony from 12pm with a community BBQ, band performance, citizenship ceremonies and presentation of Australia Day awards.
  • Ararat Olympic Outdoor Pool: Australia Day Pool Party from 2pm with fun games, face painting and a jumping castle. (The Lake Bolac Pool and Willaura Memorial Pool typically host similar events)
  • Alexandra Gardens: Australia Day Outdoor Cinema from 8.30pm, bring a picnic rug or chair and enjoy a family movie.
