Celebrated on January 26th, Australia day is a public holiday that honours the arrival of the first British Fleet on Australian soil.
Visitors to Ararat can join in on the festivities to commemorate the day, with a local community event held each year at the Alexandra Oval Community Centre, Ararat Outdoor Pool and Alexandra Gardens.

The Australia Day celebrations in Ararat kick off from 9am at the Alexandra Oval Community Centre with a free barbecue breakfast provided by the Council and prepared by the Ararat Lions Club. Official proceedings will then begin at 10am with ARCC Australia Day Awards, Australia Day Ambassador presentations, and live music.
All are welcome to attend, however, numbers are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions. You can register your attendance for the Australia Day Ceremony online through the Ararat Rural City Council website. You are also welcome to register for your attendance by calling (03) 5355 0200, or by visiting the Council Offices at 59 Vincent Street.
The Australia Day Ceremony will also be live-streamed to Moyston and Lake Bolac Hall. Registration for these venues is not required.
Due to COVID-19, there are limits on the Council’s pool party celebrations for Australia Day. However, parents can register for a free water safety session to teach their children how to safely swim in waterways.
Three sessions will be held, these are:
- Lake Bolac Peter O’Rorke Memorial Swimming Pool at 11am to 12:30pm
- Ararat Olympic Outdoor Pool at 2pm to 3:30pm and 4pm to 5:30pm
Attendance for these sessions is limited to 40 children each and can also be booked online through the Ararat Rural City Council website. This is only inclusive of children attending the session and parents/guardians do not need to register themselves.
Willaura pool will also be holding Australia Day celebrations- they will be providing a free BBQ to the community
