Hamilton Australia Day

One of the largest celebrations held throughout the country year after year is Australia Day. Celebrated on January 26th, Australia Day is a public holiday that honours the arrival of the first British Fleet on Australian soil.

Visitors to Hamilton can join in on the festivities to commemorate the day, with a local community event held each year in the Hamilton Botanic Gardens.

Australia Day recognises that on 26th January 1788, the first British fleet arrived at Port Jackson in Australia. The event is celebrated to reflect the rich history, diverse society and the unique heritage of Australia.

The Australia Day celebrations in Hamilton includes a flag raising, performances by local musicians, Hamilton Brass and Hamilton Singers, address by Australia Day Ambassador, Christine Nixon APM, Citizenship Ceremony, Australia Day Award presentations; concluding in a free community BBQ by the Hamilton Lions Club. The main festivities are held in the Hamilton Botanic Gardens and run from around 10:30am to 12pm (The wet weather venue will be the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre).

The Australia Day Award categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (for people aged under 25), Community Event of the Year and the Council’s own Community Recognition Awards.
