The Hamilton Pacing Cup goes back to 1949 when we saw legendary trotter Maori’s Idol take out the cup against a field of pacers in 1977. The event is culturally significant in the region because harness racing, locally known as the trots, is a popular spectator sport in the country, with vast sums of money wagered each year.

The sport involves Standardbred horses that are made to race around a track, pulling their drivers using a two-wheeled cart known as the sulky, bike, or gig. The Standardbred horses compete in pacing and trotting, hence the event’s name.

The Hamilton Pacing Cup is a terrific, fun way for community members and families to get together for a full day of exciting activities. It is organized by the Hamilton Harness Racing Club and is held at the Hamilton Racecourse on Ballarat Road.
