The park’s history dates back to the years of 1884 through to 1915 when it was the location of the Lord Nelson Gold Mine. By 1937, the site was developed by the St. Arnaud Borough Council through the St Arnaud branch of the Country Women’s Association.

It was then redeveloped as a park in honour of the pioneers who helped build the town before and after the war. In 1955, Pioneer Park was officially opened to the public by the President of the Pioneer Park Committee, Mrs Edna Watts.

Throughout the decades, the park has undergone continuous improvement and has been well-maintained, to the delight of its many visitors. Aside from its historical significance, the park is also believed to be the only remaining public park in Australia which was designed by Edna Walling.

Visitors enjoy taking a stroll around the park. The ore gold mine is also an interesting feature, with historical markers helping guide you through the points of interest.

Pioneer Park is highly recommended for visitors passing through St Arnaud.
