One of the most popular race meetings held at this course is the Great Western Cup which is held in January each year. Experience world-class racing at this fun-filled event and enjoy an array of other activities that the region has to offer. The race is held on the Saturday of the Australia Day weekend and welcomes a huge number of visitors from all over the world.

The racecourse offers an array of excellent facilities for participants and visitors. Nestled on a beautiful landscape, the Great Western Racecourse offers a relaxing venue in which each spectator can view this world-class race. So make sure you browse through the list of horses and place a bet on one of your favourites!

Great Western Racecourse is sprawled on an expansive 70-hectare reserve that affords excellent views and provides ample space for camping. Visitors can choose from a powered or unpowered site, with the unpowered sites being free of charge.

The racecourse is easily accessible, and the huge turnout is testament to the popularity of the races. Located 220 kilometres from Melbourne, the journey takes about two and a half hours by car on the Western Highway. For those looking for public transport, you can catch a V-Line Train to Ararat and then connect via bus to Stawell which passes through Great Western.

On race days, gates typically open at 11am with the first race at 1pm. Check local guides to confirm. There is no dress code for general admission to the racecourse, shorts and t-shirts are welcome! You are permitted to bring your own picnic into the races (no glass), however BYO alcohol is not permitted. There is a licenced bar on site. Personal BBQ’s are also not permitted to be used at the racecourse.
