Harmans Valley Lookout

Harmans Valley Lookout is located along Hamilton-Port Fairy Rd in Byaduk.

The valley is of great geological importance particularly because of the explosion of Mt Napier around 40,000 years ago, causing a great flow of lava. According to scientists, the lava flow filled up Harmans Valley.

Experts believe that the Mt Napier explosion is one of the best examples of lava flow constricted by a valley, resulting in a significant group of features unique to Australia. It’s also interesting to note that the flow was significant culturally to the early European and aboriginal settlers while adding drama to the landscape.

An information board at the lookout provides visitors with interesting facts about this area. Much of the lava flow is still seen in the valley, though the local groups have been working hard for its conservation.

Visitors interested to see Harmans Valley Lookout may arrange a self-guided tour, though this is best done if you have your own vehicle. Otherwise, it may be best to hire the services of a tour company familiar with the area.
